High Heels, High Danger?

The structure of the foot is just not meant to be crammed in the shoe that way, Dr. Braxton Little, a podiatrist at the UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, Calif., told ABC News . It just puts the body in a very unnatural position. PHOTOS: High Heels Gone Wild A first-of-its-kind study published last week in the The Journal of Applied Physiology found that wearing high heelscould lead to permanent damage comfortable high heels of the calf muscles by increasing the mechanical strain on the muscles and shortening the muscles fibers, all thanks to the flexed, toes-pointed position of the feet that remains even afteryou kick off those stilettoes. The Australian study looked at nine women, who ranged in age from late teens to early 30s, and had worn high heels for at least 40 hours per week for the past two years. Researchers, as reported in the New York Times , used ultrasound probes, electrodes and motion-capture markers to monitor the women as they walked, barefoot and then in heels, along a 26-foot-long walkway.

The Lows of Wearing High Heels

Orly Avitzur, medical adviser for Consumer Reports. She’s written about high heels dangers for years, and she told HealthPop that she’s heard from many women they simply can’t wear high heels once they reach their 40s because their feet are too damaged. “If you’re doing it in your 20s, it’s one thing,” Avitzur said. “If you do it when you’re much older, you’re accruing years and years of deformities and issues related to your feet.” Avitzur says in addition to the study’s findings, wearing high heels daily can cause hammer toes, bunions, dislocated or sprained ankles, fractures, and ligament tears – some of which may require surgery. She says the bigger the heel the woman wears, the greater the risk. And for some women who wear high heels during a night on the town, alcohol impairs balance and coordination , making risk even greater for fractures and ligament tears.

The high-tech scan enabled by the Ped-CAT machine at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, London, provides a 360-degree scan of the patient’s foot in 60 seconds. Mr.Goldberg, a foot and ankle specialist, said: “The scanner gives up much more information. It shows the deformity caused by wearing high heels is much more complicated than we previously thought. With high heels, the toes are squashed inside the shoe. The more stiletto-shaped they are, the worse it is.

The mineral and shape symbolizes an important art. It was the Navajo that showed the Zunis the art of silversmiths after years of attacks and then peace, says website spokesperson Ilona Williams. Some people cannot tell the difference between the Navajos and the Zunis jewelry, but the difference is that the Zunis had their turquoise in sets and the Navajos had heavier silver and the casting process is different. Zuni beliefs show a dominating Knife Wing as a symbol in much of their jewelry pieces, because the Knife wing was the protector of the Zunis. This half man and bird had sharp razor knife wings and was shaped for necklaces and many fetishes that were used in mostly ceremonial events. Although the Zunis were not the only tribes in the southwest that used the turquoise and silver for their jewelry, their significance is important. The Zunis jewelry is very distinctive in the world today and is a great source of income in the tourist industry, said Williams.

The thieves appear to be a couple who entered the store afterwalkingwestbound from Lemont Road, according to a police report. The couple stood by the display cabinet to the left of the store entrance. The male then sat down in a chair next to the cabinet while the female had one of the store employees show her some of the necklaces inside the display cabinet. The female tried on several of the necklaces and at one point complained of pinching while one of the necklaces was placed on her. “(The employee) believes that this is when the male subject reached over the counter and opened the unlocked sliding door of the display cabinet,” the police report said. “He then removed a white tray which contained 12 (twelve) rings from inside the display cabinet.” The male then left the store and walked eastbound towards Lemont Road. The female told the employee that she needed to get more cash and left the store eastbound towards Lemont Road.

$20K in Jewelry Taken From Downers Grove Business: Police Blotter

A Guilford man will spend an extra year in prison for stealing jewelry worth more than $200,000 from a Salem home while working for his mothers cleaning business. Joseph Ingraldi, 33, was sentenced Wednesday in New London Superior Court to a year in prison on top of a three-year sentence he received the day before in New Haven Superior Court for 13 similar theft cases in that area. Ingraldi pleaded guilty to first-degree larceny in the Salem case. The thing I found so offensive about this behavior is what you did to your mother, said New London Superior Court Judge Susan Handy, who sentenced Ingraldi. It was a real breach of trust your mother had placed in you, and I find it to be despicable. State police arrested Ingraldi in the Salem case on Dec. 21 after an investigation of several months. The theft from a Salem home was reported in April 2012.

Her followers go well beyond other Muslim women. She said she has also a “lot of non-Muslim” viewers and international media that pay attention to her work as a “fashion stylist,” as she describes herself. Muslim fashion leaders may be jolting popular stereotypes of passivity and submission that are tied to clothing that appears uniform, traditional and identity-concealing. Ninety-two percent of Muslim female respondents believed that Muslim fashion trends can lead to a positive change in the way they are perceived, according to a survey released in July by the Women’s Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality, a program of the New York-based American Society for Muslim Advancement.

It isnt worth it to me, he says, mentioning that he doesnt and wont show his wares at the Cannes Film Festival. Its not safe. Hes not the only one concerned with safety on the Croisette. I was always nervous, says the former public relations head of a major jewelry brand, who used to hit the Cannes red carpet year after year.
